Maersk Invests in New Danish Platform

Maersk Oil said Friday that it and its partners in the Danish Underground Consortium would invest $800 million in a new unmanned platform in the Danish North Sea.

The investment in the development, known as Tyra Southeast, is expected to add reserves and resources of 50 million barrels of oil equivalent over the next 30 years to Danish production, comprising of 20 million barrels of oil and 170 billion standard cubic feet of gas.

Mark Wallace, managing director for Maersk Oil Danish Business Unit, said: "The Danish North Sea still contains significant oil and gas resources. However, the remaining oil and gas is becoming progressively more difficult to extract, requiring efficient development, new technology and continued large investments."

First oil from the new development is expected in early 2015 and after installing the platform, Maersk Oil plans to drill 12 wells during 2015-2017.

Maersk Oil is a unit of Danish conglomerate A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S and is operator of the DUC joint venture.

DUC is a partnership between A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S holding a 31.2% stake, Royal Dutch Shell PLC holding 36.8%, Nordsofonden holding 20% and Chevron Corp. holding 12.0%.

Centrica Achieves First Gas from York Platform

Gas production has begun at Centrica Energy Upstream's York platform in the southern North Sea, the company announced Friday afternoon (UK time).

The field, which is 100-percent owned by Centrica, will produce around 120 million cubic feet of gas per day at its peak, the firm said.

Centrica highlighted that the York platform is the third significant greenfield project completed in as many years after Ensign, also located in the southern North Sea, and F3-FA, the first self-installing platform in the North Sea. The field also represents a successful collaboration between Centrica Energy and Centrica Storage, with gas from the field being exported via pipeline to Centrica Storage's terminal in Easington, in northeast England.

Drilling is now underway on York's second well which, at some 3.75 miles, is the longest well Centrica Energy has drilled and is one of the longest wells in the southern North Sea.

Greg McKenna, Centrica's regional director for the southern North Sea, commented in a company statement:

"The team is celebrating as first gas is achieved from York, which will produce enough gas to meet the demands of half a million households. We have taken this project from investment decision to production in just 24 months, which is testament to the hard work of the project teams in both Centrica Energy and Centrica Storage. We will continue to work closely in the coming weeks as we bring gas onshore to the upgraded Easington Terminal."

The York platform is located around 25 miles east of Humberside, England, in a water depth of 150 feet.

Petrobras Confirms Plans to Start Platform Work in China

RIO DE JANEIRO - Brazilian state-run energy giant Petroleo Brasileiro, or Petrobras, confirmed late Monday that it will start building four oil platforms in China instead of Brazil, but denied that the shift means the company will not meet strict requirements to use local goods and services.

Petrobras said that work to convert oil tankers into the P-67, P-75, P-76 and P-77 platforms would start in China, but that the work represented less than 3% of the value of the contracts to build the floating production, storage and offloading vessels, or FPSOs. The conversion, however, will be completed in Brazil, Petrobras said. The P-67 platform is part of an order for eight replicated FPSOs, while the other three platforms will be used to produce oil from areas transferred to the company from the government.

Earlier Monday, the local O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper had reported that Petrobras shifted construction of the FPSOs overseas amid concerns that local shipyards would not meet deadlines to complete construction and cause production delays. Petrobras is currently struggling with stagnant oil production because of maintenance shutdowns at aging offshore platforms and declining output at mature fields.

Concession contracts in Brazil require companies to use a certain percentage of local goods and services, part of a government strategy aimed at creating a robust oilfield-services sector to accompany development of recently discovered offshore oilfields. Petrobras plans to spend $237 billion through 2016 to develop the fields, where oil was discovered under a thick layer of salt miles under the seabed off Brazil's southeast coast.

"The index of contracted local content is immutable, and Petrobras is not trying to alter it," the company said.

Iran Attempts to Recover Gas Platform after Sinking

LONDON - Iran Wednesday confirmed it was seeking ways to recover a natural-gas platform made by an affiliate of Iran's Revolutionary Guards after it sunk in the Persian Gulf, a setback for the country in its effort to cope with international sanctions.

Divers have been deployed to see how the $40 million, 1,300-metric-ton platform can be pulled up, in the giant South Pars field, the state-owned Pars Oil and Gas Co. Ltd., said on its website.

However, a full-scale recovery has yet to start because of unfavorable weather conditions in the Persian Gulf, it said.

The platform sunk to the bottom of the Gulf as it was being installed by POGC and its builder, Iranian Marine Industrial Co., or Sadra, which is controlled by the Guards.

POGC said it was investigating the causes of the incident, which remain unclear. A spokesman for Pars Oil and Gas couldn't be reached.

Faced with a ban to import key oil technologies from the U.S. and the European Union, Iran is building its own oil equipment in order to achieve self-reliance.
