The Audubon Society's first Christmas Bird Count in the Denver metro area was held Saturday at the Audubon Center at Chatfield.

The count in the 15-mile section included Chatfield State Park, Bear Creek Lake Park, Red Rocks Park, Tiny Town and Doubleheader Mountain, as well as seven miles of the South Platte River and several foothills areas, according to the organization.

The Douglas County Christmas Bird Count is set for Dec. 29 at Roxborough State Park. The deadline to register is Dec. 26, by calling the park at 303-973-3959.

The Denver Urban Christmas Count will be Jan. 1 and includes Buckley Field and Rocky Mountain Arsenal. For more information call count leader Hugh Kingery at 303-814-2723.

The results from annual count help conservation biologists and other researchers chart populations and assess the health of birds, according to the Audubon Society.
